Masters in Animal Production

The objective of the Master´s Course Animal Production at the Federal University of Minas Gerais is to qualify professionals, developing teaching, research and community work with a focus on animal production and food quality. More specifically, we research production, processing and quality control of animal products considering the regional specificities of the Brazilian semi-arid region. Thus, we propose the promotion of scientific knowledge applied to places with similar soil and climatic characteristics in Brazil and worldwide.

So, we intend to provide knowledge to students in different areas of animal production science, such as nutrition and feed technology, health, genetics, breeding, bioclimatology, and animal welfare, besides quality and food safety for products of animal origin, enabling the identification of critical points in productive chains and granting subsidies for the management of the aquatic and terrestrial environment. We also focus on the study of native and cultivated resources for integration of the productive and agroecological processes.

Post-graduates should be able to present a critical and global view of the economic, social and cultural environments and therefore, to perform at national and international levels with solid values of scientific knowledge, ethical and political awareness.

The Master in Animal Production at UFMG is structured in three lines of research:

Animal Breeding and Management

The works developed in this line of research aim to characterize and evaluate the sanitary and reproductive managements as well as the animal welfare in semi-arid conditions. Therefore, it involves studies related to:

– Practices of disease control, reproduction and genetic improvement considering the biological and biotechnological potential of native species;

– Practices of management and strategic control to reduce the environmental impact and to obtain better quality animal products;

– Use of co-products from the Cerrado of northern Minas Geraisin the feeding, health and animal welfare;

Animal Nutrition and Feeding

The works developed in this line aim to evaluate the effect of animal feeding systems on their performance. Therefore, it involves studies related to:

– Use of semi-arid products in animal feeding;

– Evaluation of grass species, pasture management systems and agrosilvopastoral systems in the semiarid region;

– Evaluation of alternative production systems for non-ruminants and ruminants in the semiarid region;

– Conservation alternatives of products for feeding;

– Searching for new forage species and nutrients source;

– Evaluation of the health, performance and welfare of animals submitted to new feeding systems.

Quality of animal-source foods

The works carried out in this line aim to evaluate the quality of animal-source foods produced in semi-arid conditions, determining the related risk factors besides developing and improving the technologies applied in their production. Therefore, it involves studies related to:

– Analysis of the physical-chemical composition and the microbiological and sensory properties of foods produced by animals submitted to different nutritional and health treatments;

– Analysis of the animal production stages under semi-arid conditions;

– Use of molecules from the Cerrado of Northern Minas Gerais to improve the quality of animal-source products.

Curricular structure

The subjects were structured to be taught, primarily, at the Montes Claros Campus. For academic activities developed in partnership with other programs and/or taught by professors in other locations, videoconferencing resources provided by Institution may be used.

The graduate student in animal production at UFMG must attend 18 credits: 4 (four) compulsory and 14 (fourteen) optional.

The compulsory subjects will comprise: Seminars I and II, both with two credits and workload of 30 hours each. Academic production and dissertation defense are also considered mandatory activities, however, these activities do not generate credits. The student must be enrolled in these activities to proceed with the dissertation defense. Whit respect to optional subjects, the student together with his guidance committee must organize the master’s study plan within the chosen line of research.
